Just a note to let everyone know that while pulling a tree trunk with my '54 WD45 on Sunday, the shifter stuck in first gear, had a lot of side to side play but no forward and back motion. Luckly it still drove in 1st so I parked it and began looking in the AC forum here for archived messages regarding the transmissions.

There were dozens about WD45's sticking in different gears, and how to pull the snap rings and the shifter, shine a light down through the top of the tower and line up the shifter forks.

I read as many as I could find, went out this morning and within 1/2 hour I had the thing shifting and driving just fine. The most time-consuming thing was getting the bushing and snap rings back in - there must be some special tool for that because it took almost 10 minutes to get them back in with a pliers and screwdrivers.

Anyway, your advice and help to others in the past has helped me greatly today. Thank you!

I noticed Sunday and today that the engine wouldn't run unless the choke was pulled out quite a bit. The fuel bowl didn't have any rust in it (a problem in the past) but the engine acts exactly like it did when the bowl would fill with rust. I tool the bowl off and let some fuel run in to a cup - it had a good stream of fuel coming out of the tank. I wonder if some of the rust may have gotten in to the fuel line and clogged it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I finally got the tree trunk cut in half (too big around to cut straight through - had to make v-cuts on both sides so the 20" chainsaw would reach through the middle) and used the WD45 to pull the pieces back to the pasture.

Thanks again!

HI Vic

Is gas getting to the Carb? A nice steady stream of gas; No: 1st Check the settlement Bowl. 2nd the fuel line.

Yes: Check the bottom drain of Carb. for gas; No: Clean out needle value (where the float is) two ways ;1st take off fuel line off of the carb.and blow carb cleaner into the carb. 2nd take carb off and clean it out Yes: Is tractor still running with choke on ( or out)Yes : Clean Carb No : Try to Start Normaly

I've had allot of trouble this year bad Gas or bad Gas can???

Do your best to make sure, your gas is clean and using good gas.

I have started to put screen on the top of the settlement bowl into the Gas tank, normal screen like a tube ( 1/2"*1" ) tied on with thin wire, trying to stop some of this. I would do this If I was you . If you come across any screen for the settlement bowls I need them Too .

Good luck !!

My WD acted like that when the outer chamber of the air cleaner was clogged.

Could be an air leak (like the fit of the carb to the mainfold) that's leaning the mixture out. Or maybe the butterfly shaft seal on the carb is wobbled out.

Yes it can be , try to spray carb cleaner around the area, you should get a funny sound or rough running enghine. If there are any leaks, exhast would not cause this BUT >>>>>>>>> WATCH FOR A FIRE BECAREFUL !! Be ready for one, make sure enghine is cold just in case you use water, I have never had a fire doing this.

Try to make sure you are not letting it get into the air intake assy.

RR, I was getting ready to move the WD45 off the driveway the other day and when I cranked it the engine seemed to cough and a stream of clean oil spewed out of each hole in the mushroom cap looking thing on top of the oil bath air cleaner, and the engine didn't start. I was almost afraid to crank it again, but when I did it started just fine and even though it still has the starving for gas behaviour, with the choke pulled out it's running very well.

What could the spewing oil out the cap on the oil bath air cleaner/starving for gas/runs good with the choke out signify? I haven't gone to the archives to check it out yet.

Any insight would be helpful.

my Wd45 has the same problem with the fuel...it is just crude getting to the carb in mine,,, I am going to clean the tank but it has to wait till hay season is over,,, when it acts up a good whack on the carb cleans her right out for a while.....not a fix, but a temporary thing till I get time to clean the tank,,,Jim
