WD45 Generator?

Trying to fix a charging problem on a 1955 WD45. It's a 6v, + ground, button start, without a magneto, but with a cutout relay. The harness was replaced piece-meal, so wire colors aren't original. It starts and runs fine, but lights have never worked and it doesn't charge.
I disconnected the lights at the switch incase there is a short in them somewhere. There is 6.2v on the battery side of the cutout, but nothing on the generator side (running) or on the (A) terminal. Manually closing the relay pushes the ampmeter to about -15A. Inside the generator is fairly clean, and the brushes look good. Also found a wire from the (F) terminal to ground that I disconnected. Seems like all the other wiring is correct as far as I can tell. So, I'm thinking the generator is bad, or maybe needs to be "polarized" (not sure what, how, or why)?
Can anyone give me some advise on this? I've gone about as far as I can with the archives. Would hate to replace the generator, only to find out the problem is elsewhere.
Tahnks, Clay

Yeah!!! It charges now, and the lights work for the first time.
Turns out the generator's armature was burnt-out, and it's front bearing ready to go. Kaza Auto Electric completely re-built it for $100. Also found a shorted wire going to the headlight (near battery box). It's sporting a 20A fuse instead of a 1" piece of copper tubing for the lights.
Thanks to everyone that helped me fix this for my brother.

the "F" terminal is grounded thru the light switch. if the swithc is bad, or not grounded properly the charge will not work.
to test generator, ground the "F" terminal. Run the "A" straight to the ampmeter (bypass the cutout) start and see if you get 10 amps on the ampmeter and 6.5 volts (about). if not , then the generator is the problem.

Clay,
I will e-mail you a diagram showing the light switch charging system. Duey

Duey, Tried polarizing it, but NoGo. I took the generator off and ran some continuity checks. With everything disconnected, the F and A terminals, and all three brushes are shorted together. Is this normal? Is it likely that the F to Ground jumper I found hooked-up fused something in the internal wiring/windings? The first owner always disconnected the battery when not in use, so maybe the jumper was a "temp" fix. Cleaning it out with carb cleaner couldn't hurt...but seems like time to have it rebuilt. What do you think? Clay

Clay,
The field being grounded would make the generator charge full out. I think your whole system needs to be checked out by to find out what is good and what is not. A bad generator can zap the cutout relay or regulator and a bad cutout can cause the battery to discharge back through the generator and possibly cause damage. And then there is the wiring. That needs to be checked for breaks and shorts etc. I think you are on the right track, just make sure the wiring is good when you hook up any rebuilt parts. A generator system will take more abuse than an alternator system and still work but it sounds like your system needs a good check up from top to bottom. Duey
