My WD 45 is still a six volt system but the previous owner put a 12 volt battery in it. Seems to work fine, but I wonder if it will cause any problems and should I go back to a 6 volt, or convert it to a 12 volt charging system.

Also have a small hole in the side of the manifold (exhaust side) any of you had any luck welding or brazing manifolds? or should I simply replace it?

The worst thing that may happen is burnt points,, find a junk yard and buy the resistor from a old dodge car or truck or get one from the local parts place,, its a porceline resistor and usually has 2 resistors in it. hook the wire to the coil from the battery to this resistor and then and it will be fine. and if one side of the resistor goes bad you can switch it to the other.. as for the manifold, if its a small hole you can braze it or use JB Weld,, the JB weld actually works great because it doesnt show up as a big gold glob,,,,Jim

LH,
I have a friend that has the same set up, 12v batt in a 6v system. He seems to get along fine but uses the tractor very seldom. I have a web page that has some diagrams and other information if you decide to make changes. My e-mail is on the site if you have any questions. Duey

Thanks Duey and everyone. Right now everything seems to be working fine, I just didn't wanna burn the electrical system up using a 12 volt battery. I did switch the headlights over to 12 volt bulbs but everything is OK so far. My tractor fund is pretty well depleted right now and that's why I asked about welding or brazing the manifold.

If your manifold has a hole in it the rest can't be in very good shape. New ones are relatively cheap ($110 to $180) it would be very difficult to weld the old one and get something that will be anywhere near as good as a new one. I have replaced a couple and it is unbelievable how much better the tractor runs. John

Hey John
When you replaced your manafold. How did you get out the rusted bolts? I am thinking about replaceing mine. It is on a d-17, and i am afraid that i might bust the manafold studs off when i try to take off the old manafold. Have you ever had that happen to you? If so how did you fix it?
Thanks
John

Use a torch to heat the area of the head around the bolt- better than just heating the bolt. As it cools, try hold a candle on the bolt, letting the wax melt into the threads. Wait a bit,and unscrew the stud bolt. Just did a '37 WC- tried heat with and without candle, and the only one that did not come out right away was the one without the wax. Used wax and it came out- not broken studs, no drilling or re-tapping. Use Never-Seize on new studs on reassembly.

To tell the truth, I haven't broken off the studs in the head. I fire up the torch before I touch a wrench and get the nuts RED hot then turn them off. If you still have the original brass nuts it works easier, but I still use the torch first. John

Get a left handed drill bit small enough that it will fit in the threaded hole without hitting the threads. If I break off a manifold bolt or stud, I use a reversible air drill with the left handed bit, and half the time the heat from drilling will loosen the threads & the drill will turn out the broken piece. If not, it will weaken it enough that you can use a small chisel & work the remaining ring of the bolt out. It is a lot easier on a tractor than on a car because you can see what you are doing. Eastwood has left handed bits and I think you can also order them from mcmaster-carr in chicago (www.mcmaster.com)
