Most of the big winches have two levers one is the brake and the other is a shifter (forward, neutral, and reverse). Many of the smaller winches have a single lever and no reverse. Push the lever one direction and winch powers cable in, release the lever and it stops power and sets the brake, push the lever the other direction and the brake is released. These winches have no power reverse; you pull the cable. Made for a smaller, lighter, cheaper winch and you can usually pull the cable out faster than the winch would power ( up to about 5/8 inch line). As the cat skinners always told me, when I was setting chokers, "Pull harder, she'll come easier".
Hope this helps,
