We are the orginals owners of this 1957 wd45 my father replaced the rear end with a wd. The shifter went bad and I replaced it. One week prior I jumped it and with some starter fluid it ran fine. This time after replacing shifter it cranked then locked up. Strater won't move. I couldn't move the engine with the hand crank. Could I have put the battery in backward? It has been converted to a 12 volt system. Sure would appreciate any help you can give.

The same thing happened to me. We even tried pulling it with another tractor. The back wheels skidded even in 4th gear when being pulled. I took the starter off and checked it out. It was ok, so I put it back in and it worked again.

starter will not crank backward if battery is reversed. i suggest you remove the valve cover and look at the valves. If all looks good, remove the 4 spark plugs and starter motor. Try to bar the engine over with a pointed bar on the flywheel teeth. If it dont move, you got big problems inside. Ran out of oil pressure, bearing siezed, or piston siezed, etc.- Put the transmission in gear and try to rock the rear wheels {with valve cover off and plugs out}, does anything try to move? If not you are ready to tear it down.

You might try pulling the starter off the tractor, then see if you can turn the motor over by hand. Sometimes the starter drive can jam against the ring gear causing a lockup like you describe.
