My neighbor has just gotten an A-C model B, and I will be helping him get it running. (It is complete, but has sat in a garage for about 10 years). I looked up the serial number (B57342) on this site and it was built in 1943. Can someone help me with the engine number? It is EE58687K. I have no idea if the engine may be older or newer than the rest of the tractor. Thanks for any information.

I'll bet if you look a little harder, you'll see that the engine serial number begins with BE not EE. The earlier B's (like yours) used the model BE engine (116 CID) while newer ones used a model CE engine (125 CID). The only difference is a thinner sleeve and bigger piston in the newer ones to get the larger displacement. Any of the older ones that were overhauled almost always got the bigger pistons. Also, I think you misread the serial number page. Serial number 57,342 would have been built in 1942. Finally, I would say that the engine in the tractor is probably the original. It's slightly higher than the tractor serial number which makes sense when you consider that some of the engines were used as power units, on combines, etc., etc. Also, the K suffix would indicate that this engine was originally equipped to burn kerosene or distillate. The main differences would have been lower compression pistons and a different manifold to heat up the incoming air/fuel mixture. This tractor must have the regular fuel tank and then a smaller one for gasoline for starting.

Dan, you are right, I did misread the serial number list.

Thanks for the insight into the different displacements. I will recheck the engine number tomorrow (it is my neighbor's tractor and is at his house).

The neighbor did say the man he got it from told him it was originally set up for kerosene.
