I have a 1958 D-17 that i am restoring. I want to restore it back to factory conditions.
I need to know how many differsnt colors were used on this tractor. I also need to know were those colors were used. A picture of one that is factory original would be verry helpful.
Thanks Jc

Headlights, steering wheel and breather caps were black. Muffler, air cleaner stack, rims and lug nuts were silver. The centers of the front and rear wheels are orange like everything else. The tractor should be Persian Orange #1 but most places can't mix it twice in the same shade and it varies from different companies. Just look at all the different shades at AC shows. Persian Orange #2 seems to be more consistant but it is a brighter orange. Usually if paint is listed as "AC orange" that is what you get. Paint it PO #2 and you can easily touch it up with a spray can.

I have put three old AC films on video, and one is an introduction to the D-17, and has lots of great footage from 1957 - including plowing, a dealer demonstration, and other period footage. It might not be real helpful as yours is a 1958, but it might be interesting to you. I am charging $23 including shipping for three movies (intro to D-14, intro to D-17, and a piece on chopping forage) - a total of just under an hour of viewing. Color with sound. E-mail me if you are interested.

Your tractor should be Persian Orange #1 with
silver wheels and orange centers. The steering
wheel, headlights and grill borders and bars are
black. Grill mesh, muffler and pre-cleaner air
stack are silver.

According to Wendell's book, you are correct for a Series 2, but the Series one had orange grill, (including border- bars were not on the series one),black headlights and steering wheel, and silver air cleaner pipe. Series three and four had the cream wheels. Generator is also black.

Yep, my mistake, early D17 had the orange grill
and no cross braces. I'm getting the series mixed
up.

Your local Agco store will have a gallon of Persian or Corporate orange, you will also need silver for the rims and cream, one qt. each. Get a collector book on A-C, most have good photos for reference. A set of decals is $40 or less on the internet.

Actually the 58 models didn't have any cream colors on them..... but I believe the grill should be black??
I have a 58, but it had been repainted with yellow (yuck) wheels and grill before I got it. It seems someone had some Massey Harris yellow they wanted to get rid of lol!

I might get around to painting the d-17 next week. the pictures i have seen so far are with the grill the same color as the rest of the tractor.
The other two colors are silver and black. But what on the tractor is silver and black

Isn't persian orange#2 and corporate orange alot brighter than the paint used on the earlier "D" series tractors? I'm getting ready to repaint a WD45 and am having trouble with the paint store getting the right shade. I don't think AGCO has Persian #1 paint anymore. Correct me if I am wrong. Harold
