When I push in the foot clutch and try to shift. I gring the heck out of the gears. I can turn off the tractor and then shifts ok. Is there any adjustment I can make instead of splitting the tractor? I took the plate off from under the tractor and it looks the fingers for the through bearing can be adjusted, but I thought I should ask the board for help first. I do not want to make an expensive mistake. Forgot to mention, that I just purchasde the tractor and it was sitting for a while.

Thanks for any and all help!!

dave

MAKE SURE THERE IS ENOUGH GEAR LUBE IN THE TRANSMISSION. MY 51WD DEVELOPED A GEAR LUBE LEAK AT THE PTO GASKET AND WOULD NOT SHIFT WELL UNTIL I PUT ENOUGH GEAR LUBE [USE 85-140 WT] IN THE TRANS. TO SLOW DOWN THE GEARS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROBLEM, HOPEFULLY YOUR CLUTCH ISN'T STUCK.

Sounds like the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel....Put the tractor in the higest working gear, not road gear (to fast for in the barn yard).....start the tractor and drive it around with the clutch pushed in.....you might try jabing the break .....if this doesen't work hook too a heavy load and pull it around holding in the clutch....

I had the same problem with my Wd45, I took the plates off the bottom of the clutch housing and found springs in there,,, tearing the tractor down was siple,, took less then 30 minutes to pull the engine, I was impressed at how easy it was. 15 more minutes had the clutch out, I think if need be a WD45 clutch could be changed and you could be back in the field in less then 2 hours,,,, I know a guy who blew a engine while plowing, drug the tractor home,. pulled the engine off the wd45 had another wd45 with a bad tranny so he pulled the engine off that swapped them and was back going in 2 1/2 hours,,,, Gotta love AC....JIm

My first question would be has this been this way since you got it home or did it start acting up a little and get progressively worse? If it has been this way since you brought it home my guess would be the clutch plates have stuck togather. If you put the tractor in a lower gear and keep dragging it back and forth with the clutch pedal depressed it will probably break loose and you shouldn't have any more trouble. It's a common problem with machinery that has been sitting a few years. If the second situation fits,I would look at the throwout bearing. If it siezed, when it contacts the throwout fingers on the pressure plate, the fingers will make the bearing rotate the tranny input shaft making it impossible to shift.I would advise against turning the adjustment screws on the pressure plate.I hope I helped a little. There's some excellent mechanics on this board and I'm sure they will add more.

I just swapped motors in my B. Had same problem. Found that if I engaged the pto. then it would work fin--no grinding (in fact you can watch the pto, when it stops, put it in gear). I hope this is only temporary until everything gets worked into place after some use.
