Is it possible for the hydraulic fluid in a WD to get into the transmission? What's the fix?

Yes it is pos. their is no seal btween then their is the shaft that yr PTO gear runs on. that shaft is a tight fit but will let a little by only if yr trans. is low enought 4 grav, flow. I have had mine apart. Only other way is if u got a crack btween the 2 houseings. R u shour that it is leading in2 the tran. and not out the rams?

Don't have the service manual in front of me but I think there's a seal that separates the hydraulic and transmission compartments, this could be the problem.
