Starting problems on D 14

I have a AC D14 that I am having problems starting and need help. It has been starting fine and then just quit starting. When I hit the starter button, the starter makes the "whirring" sound but the motor is not turning over. The first this happened, I wore the battery down starting it. After I recharged the battery, it started right up (it may have rolled when I put the clutch in to start it). It kept starting all day and then for the return trip it would not start. This time I tested the battery before charging and it tested fine. I am wondering if there is missing teeth on the flywheel. Any suggestions?

Or could be maybe your Bendix drive on the end of the starter sticks. It is dependent on inertia to throw itself into engagement. Starters without solenoids use this mechanical means of engaging. Suggest you pull the starter and look at the drive condition. Maybe a little WD40 or if really bad it might have to be replaced.
