Clutch and brake pedals

I have a 1953 WD 45 with a front loader. The left brake pedal has been linked to the clutch pedal so that both the clutch pedal and the left brake pedal move simultaneously and work the clutch. Only the right brake pedal works the brake and I have been unable to determine whether that pedal works both brakes, although looking at the linkage, I suspect it only works the right brake. Ever heard of this? Why was it done? Any suggestions about how to undo it? I like having the independent brakes, especially with the narrow front end.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts about whether or not unleaded fuel or ethanol has any bad effects on these old engines?

Has the linkage actually been modified so that the clutch and brake pedals are connected or is it just rust that links them? I had one where both pedals moved together, but there was no mechanical connection. Check on the left end of the common shaft that they pivot on.

Thank you, JMS, that's exactly what the problem was. The left brake pedal is clamped to the transverse shaft, as is the actuator arm for the left brake, on the left end of the shaft. The right brake pedal on the right side and the clutch pedal on the left each has a zerk fitting, and they're supposed to move freely on the shaft. The zerk fittings were painted shut. I removed the zerks and sprayed in some liquid wrench and tapped everything with a hammer. Next day everything moved pretty freely, so I put in the new zerks and greased them. It all works fine now! Thanks again.
