Hello. I have a 1940 AC model B tractor. Just this past weekend I noticed a problem with perhaps the clutch mechanism. With the clutch pedal pushed all the way I still am unable to shift the tractor into gear or engage the PTO. However, I can start the tractor while in gear and the clutch depressed and the tractor doesn't start automatically moving. This seems to me that the clutch mechanism is working in this situation. I have adjusted the clutch as recommended in the manual but the problem still occurs. If any of you have any suggestions I would like to hear them. Thank you,

Had this problem with a B after swapping engines. Turned out to be the pilot bearing was too tight on the transmission imput shaft. It would stick and make it not release, but after it was released and spinning it was OK and you could shift. A little lapping compound on a similar size piece of shafting and it was fine.

I think you have the same problem that Dick L addressed in a response on 7/12/01. If you start the tractor with the clutch depressed and out of gear and with the clutch still down are able to shift it from one gear to the other without it grinding (clutch still down) then the clutch is not the problem. If once you let the clutch out it will no longer let you shift without grinding then the transmission is the problem. I cannot find the post in the archives so I will try and give you the jest of what Dick said. "To stop the free wheeling of your transmission (if you find that the clutch is ok and oil in the transmission is ok) adjust the counter shaft bearing which is located on the front of the transmission under a cap which is secured by three bolts. This nut is staked at the factory and will not loosen on its own; however, the bearing will wear and cause the transmission to free wheel allowing the gears to keep turning. This makes getting the tractor in gear near impossible. The cap for the bearing is located just below the main shaft. You adjust this bearing like you would a wheel bearing just tight enough to get a drag on the main shaft." The only problem is getting to the nut. You have to split the tractor between the transmission and torque tube to reach it. I hope you have a service manual for your "B" which shows how to disconnect the transmission from the clutch main shaft when you make the split.

This was the same problem I was having with my "B" and Dick's advice finally fixed the problem. I had replaced the clutch assembly and the oil wick and it was still grinding. Hope this helps.
