I just checked the oil on my 48B today and ran a bit out into a jar and discovered water in sump..not a lot but it is there..Is this a problem? Should I be worried
I am thinking it may be condensation from engine or maybe a leak into engine from sleeves or water pump or somewhere..any advice is appreciated
regards Peter

If you are getting coolant from your radiator in the oil pan.The o-rings around the sleeves could be leaking, there is a frost plug under the valve cover that could be rusted out and leaking into the pan,or the head gasket could be leaking. If you want to know how to check these out let me know.

If it is just clear water it may be just condensation. If it was antifreeze water you may have a problem. I would just monitor it closely and watch that the water level in the radiator does not go down and that the oil level does not rise. It you can borrow a cooling system pressure tester you could pressurize the cooling system and see if it holds pressure. If it does water is not getting into the crank case.

I know when I restored her there was water everywhere (sump, gearbox etc) and wondered if it is something that happens with these tractors

YES if left outside. Water trickles in through faulty gearshift boots, around the exhaust manifold, etc ... and let's not forget how snow finds its way into almost any nook or crevice. A shed pays for itself in short order if you have one, but if you don't a tarp will help.

Hey thanks guys!!! as usual I know I can count on the expert advice I receive here and I will follow up on that advice...here are some other observations that may shed light on subject
The water level in radiator seems to remain constant - I had a leaky water pump or radiator wasnt sure where the water came from so added antifreeze and a bars leaks compound which stopped it but also noticed that I may have overfilled the radiator (right to the top) and I think it has a natural level - and I remembered that I had a loose magneto (had noticed a gap) and its possible water was running in through the top of magneto and getting flung back into governor as I found water in there so I will check again in a couple of weeks and see.
thanks again
