we just replaced the mower belt on our lawn tractor and the new one shredded within 5 minutes
what should we look for that could be causing the problem?
it's a model 312 and the serial number is 15502615

Worn sheaves(pulleys)will cause belt to roll over and this will cause failure. seen belts roll 180 deg. they don't last long like this. Keith

I agree with all the advice you've been given. Just wanted to point out that the site below may be valuable as you continue to use this fine piece of 30-year equipment....

Check your bearings, rough spots on the pulleys, and alignment. With the belt off make sure all the pulleys turn freely by hand.

Also make sure you get a new belt from your local AGCO or Simplicity dealer. Parts store belts will not work on these mowers.

Neither will belts from TSC if they are not specific for that mower. The belt I bought for my craftsman mower only lasted a couple of weeks. I went to sears and got a OEM belt and have'nt had any problems.

Kay,

An OEM belt is a belt from the "Original Equipment Manufacturer". Get your belts from AGCO or Simplicity. Simplicity built all of the Allis-Chalmers lawn tractors and their dealers can usually cross the model numbers over to Simplicity and get you the "right" belt.

No biggie, but Allis-Chalmers actually built the 300 and 400 series mowers in their plant in Lexington, South Carolina. They are an Allis-design and only the transmissions and rear-ends are made by Simplicity....

Allis also built the some of the 100-series and all the 200-series in the Lexington plant, but they were based on Simplicity designs and almost everything is interchangeable....

thanks everyone as you can tell I'm not too knowledgeable about this-or it's a"blonde" thing :):)

my husband has retired the tractor to the garage for now

my next door neighbor came over and finished the lawn

hubby did fix the old Lawn Boy push mower but we have over half an acre and that's a lot to mow
