I'm on the downhill side of a 10 month restoration of my model C. I've put her back to the original 6 volt electrical system. Any recommendations on a good 6 volt battery? Is there a certain minimum size I need? This tractor will primarily be for show once I'm done so it will do a lot of sitting.

Has anyone bought any products from the Antique Battery website see link below)?

Thanks in advance!

I have been very happy with NAPA 6 volt commercial batteries in my tractor (it uses 2 in series) to provide 12 volts. NAPA stores are everywhere, their commercial warranty is as good or better than everyone else I looked at, and their batteries had higher ratings than others I checked.

If you are near any boat marina's they usually sell real good 6V batteries for boats. Got mine there three years ago for $40 and it's still running fine. I do use the tractor (WD).

well first i wouldnt put a six in it. i would put a 8 volt in it, your generator will keep a 8 volt charged up, an the 8 volt will not burn the lights out. at least we never had with anything we have put them in. the units will start so much nicer with a 8 volt. we got ours from the local an home store.

Be careful about the height of the battery you get. I put a battery in my B that was slightly taller than theold one, and the negative post arced (grounded) to the box cover, and sparks flew from the light/charging switch box, in addition to the small fire that ignited on the battery box top paint. Now my switch and/or guage does not work right. One of these days I'll tire of charging the battery occasionally and have to fix it.

I picked up a 6V battery for my tractor from a local store that specialized in auto/truck/tractor/industrial batteries and small engines. It was a third-party brand; it's been a good one. As for minimum size, get the one that has the most amps for the physical size that will fit in your C. My 6V battery makes 835 amps and 635 cold amps. If you decide to go this route, a store like NAPA or Auto Value can get one for you. I don't know if Advance or Auto Zone can get them, but I'd think they could.

John Deere dealers sell a battery named the Hibernator that is particularly good at maintaining it's charge while the vehicle is parked for long periods of time. You may want to consider it.

I agree with Gene, I use 8 volt batterys in any thing that had a 6 volt. They tell me that your points will not last as long, but all of my stuff is retired anyway. So i do not worry about it. They sure start nice though.
