I've got a "52" WD with a loud 2nd gear. I know this tractor was worked hard before I bought it. Does it need a new gear and how much? Thanks

I used to have an older WD with straight gears and it was extremely loud in 2nd gear. Apparently, that was "plow gear" and it was just used a lot. It never gave me any trouble - I used the tractor for pulling a 7 foot bush hog. Although the cost for replacing one gear may seem reasonable, it may not solve the problem. How the "new" gear meshes with existing ones determines how noisy it will be. To really be assured of quiet operation, I would replace the entire transmission, or just endure the noise. FWIW!

The cause of the loud sound is not the gears. It starts with the flat roller bearings in the bottom of the tranny. You can replace the flat bearings and check the shaft to see if it is worn.If the shaft is worn, you can have it built up and turned down. The gears are probably gummed out from the wear. The roar of a WD is a given. I have done this to WD's and WC's. The noise will change with the new bearings but it will never give out on you. It's not like the 45 tranny and start jumping out of gear. Keep driving-WD's last for ever. Hope this helps

Thanks L Hud, I'll save that little project for latter then.
