I have a late 1971 Ac 190 Xt cane tractor That falls out of 4th gear when i decelerate I suspect the detent is bad But the IT shop manual says to spit tractor before removing trans cover Is this true or is the manual wrong again.I have had many covers of the older tractors with no problems Thank you Jim

Your problem is probably not the detent but the fourth gear and the 3rd 4th gear sliding collar. You can grind the detent deeper on the rail but it is short lived remedy. You can put in 4th gear by splitting at trans. and rear end as it comes out front of rear end. To get to the collar you have to split tractor and pull axles, differental, bull gears and top pinion shaft to get it out. You can pull shift cover by removing center floor plate putting trans in second gear and pulling cover. If you pull cover make sure reverse gear is lined up with second gear shift fork slot before reasembling. If you need further info just post.
