I recently converted my WD to 12V. All works well "except" - I have seen the alternator (one wire Delco) charge only one time. I know everything is wired correctly. Had the alternator (took it off an old car) tested & it was OK. Changed the drive pulley so the wide AC belt could be used. The AC pulley is considerably larger than the Delco one. Could it be the alternator is just not turning fast enough to make it charge? Would appreciate opinions and experiences of others. Thanks....James

James,

One wire alternators work great, but they need around 1200-1400 rpm to "excite" the regulator. Once the charging rate starts, it'll charge till you shut down the tractor. Because tractors operate at lower rpm's it's a little tougher to rely on a one wire to keep a good charge in the battery unless you put the tractor to work for a while in order for the alternator to bring the reserve back into the battery. Short trips or low usage will eventually bring the battery's reserve down which will lead to a dead battery.

Is it a true one wire alternator or a 3 wire? I normally use a 3 wire (73 up GM), and when I converted my JD backhoe with a known good alternator it wouldnt charge until I wired in the idiot light between terminal 1 and ground. Terminal 2 was wired directly to the alternator output terminal and the battery. If it is a true one wire, somehow the internal regulator has to get flashed with some voltage to get it started.

The alternator has to be turning at 1200 rpm to start charging. No idea what that would be on your engine rpm (depends on pulley diameters as you know).

Check out the Genesee Products link below - they have been a GREAT help and offer wiring kits, electronic ignition, etc. They also have some really good explanation links.

They helped me determine that my "one wire" alternator that came on my B (that would charge but wouldn't drop below 7 amps at any time) had a problem and gave me instructions on how to fix it (and sold me the parts). Great folks to deal with.

one wire alternators are common on boat and large truck motors that run full throttle quite often. if it is truly a 1 wire unit, probably needs a very small pulley so it will spin much faster. try going to full thirottle and let it set for a minute, see if it "jumps in"
