Difference between B and C?

How does a person tell the difference between a B and a C? I see some of these at swap meets and local antique tractor shows, but don't have a clue how to indentify them. I don't even know where to look for a serial number. My knowledge is limited to CA, WD, WD-45, and WC. Thanks...James

One has a letter "B" on the side of the radiator cowl and the other has the letter "C" in the same spot. Hope this helps! LOL!

both tractors use the same radiator, engine, transmission. there are a few things that might help to distinguish, but you run into tractors that are a combinations of both the B and C.
--most Bs are wide front end, most Cs are narrow front.
--the serial number is stamped by the transmission shift lever on the case.
--the steering arm on the steering box of a B points down. The steering arm on a C points straight up.
--the steering arm on the front axle of a B is on the left wheel king pin, the steering arm on the front of a C is under the radiator and points up.
---the B rear axle is 12 inches narrower than the C from wheel to wheel. Hub to hub the B is about 52 inches, the C is about 64 inches wide.
--rear wheel on the Bs held on by one center "BIG" nut to the axle, C mounted with 5 lug nuts.
---of course there are exceptions to the above, but this gives you a starting point. I saw a B last summer mounted to a 4 speed CA transmission and hydraulic unit, with the B final drives. go figure?

The B has the arched style fixed wide front and the C usually has the tricycle narrow front (there are a few (rare) adjustable wide fronts). The B was set up to be a one row tractor and the C was a two row machine so the B is narrower than the C in tread settings.

Go to Tractor photos link under Gallery on the left side of this web page and click on Allis Chalmers then choose a B and a C to look at an you will see what I mean.
The C was rated at a slightly higher HP. The CA was a replacement for the C

The serial numbers are just ahead of the gear shift lever.

The C is the trycycle row crop, the B was the wide front.

I just bought a C today with the adjustable wide front. I have a friend who has a parts tractor with an adjustable wide front.

"most" of the C tractors built wer narrow front end. There were a good number built with the wide front end, most of these were "adjustable" on the C. The B was always wide front, no narrows. "Most" of the B had the fixes wishbone front end, "some" were the adjustable unsed like the C, these with adjustable front axles, also had the 5 lug bolt rear hubs instead of the "big nut" in the center.

The distance between the final drive casings (inside to inside):

B - approx 33 inches

C - approx 45 inches

Easiest way to tell in some cases (even though different finals/trannys/etc. have been used for repair on occasion. Recently saw a B sold with a C replacement tranny - had a C serial number on it but was a B everywhere else.)
