Hello,
I am working for a farmer who has an Allis Chalmers G tractor. I was wondering if anybody knows the shift pattern for this tractor. How many speeds are there?

I usually seem to have problems finding the proper gears.
Please e-mail privately, THANKS, Troy

It should be the same as the B anc C since the same transmission was used (except for the G's with the creeper gear - no idea how that was). Swinford's book says the G had a special modified B gearbox (this is the creeper gear transmission I mentioned) with speeds of 1.6, 2.25, 3.5, and 7.0 mph forward, but I seem to remember some folks saying some G's had the standard B gearbox. The standard B shift pattern is:

left forward - 2nd
left rear - 3rd
right forward - 1st
right rear - reverse

The pattern should be cast in the top of the transmission - it is for B, C and CA tractors. Hope that helps.

The creeper gear is right of 1st, or extra-right.

I don't think this tractor I'm using is the same as what you described. Reverse is left and up. Maybe there are different versions out there?

Thanks for the help so far, Troy

Actually, I haven't driven my G much yet this year - I may have the forward and back reversed - sorry ...

if you stand on your head and look under the seat the shift patern is cast into the top of the transmission on the left side of the shifter. this is more or less under your but as you are sitting on the tractor

Yes, the G uses the B transmission, but it is backwards, since the engine is in the rear. That is why reverse is left and forward rather than right and back.
It also explains why the shift pattern is under the seat instead of out where you can see it. It may also explain why you are having trouble getting the right gear. If you are used to anything else, this is opposite.

The transmission is actually mounted the same way in the G as in the B or C. The clutch housing on the G replaces the PTO housing as found on the B or C. The shift pattern is the same as the B or C. Extra low is to the far right and forward, first is to the right and forward, reverse is to the right and back, second is to the left and forward, and third is to the left and back.

Oops ! Sorry. Thanks. Dan. I stand corrected. I was thinking about the transmission being driven backwards (from the back end) and mistakenly thought that would make the gear ratios be opposite also. IT WAS JUST MY THINKING THAT WAS BACKWARDS !
