Eddie I had a Case do the same thing and it was a bent shifter fork that was trying to slide forward gears into place when the rear gears weren't out. Did you have the shift lever locking , or did you have to give it a wrap to shift? I believe mine got bent by an inexperienced driver who just jammed the shifter into gear and caused the fork to bend and actually crack. I had to take it out and get it welded, aligned the gears and everything has been fine since...about ten years now..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

when in neutral does it try to go backward? might be stuck in reverse gear. i would open the cover and look at the shift forks/ pin. might be excess play in the linkage

I've got a '54 WD45 that did almost the same thing. Would back up all day with no problems. Forward gears would make a loud "clicking" noise and would hardly move at all. When it clicked, the shifter would jerk to the side rather violently. I thought initially it was the clutch, but that would not explain the reverse gears working o.k.. I ended up removing the shifter tower to discover that the rails were not moving freely. I think it was trying to go into two forward gears at the same time. A lot of compressed air and liquid wrench/wd-40 later, the rails were moving back and forth freely. I put the tower back on and it seems to have cleared up the problem. I also discovered that the hand clutch had dried out. I didn't know it was supposed to be a wet clutch. Hope this helps.
