Compression, I think?

I am not an engine mechanic, but I'm trying to learn. My question is this:
How would an engine behave if the spark plugs were so loose I could unscrew them with two fingers? I'm assuming it would effect the compression? What would it do?

It would probably start and run well, but a faint "ticking" may be heard while running due to the loss of compression, which would be very slight due to the speed of the piston rising in the bore.

I had a mower once that would not *start* unless the plug was loose. Turned out that the points were shot. The loose plug meant a poor ground, which allowed the spark voltage to build up more, which could then get a spark across the bad points and fire the plug. Just a tidbit that had me puzzled for a while ....!
