D-14 starter problems

This is about a starter problem on another 1957 d-14, and I'm a different Doug than the other guy.
When I press the starter button, I was getting an initial short crank, which was often enough to start the tractor. If it didn't start it, it would do nothing or click. Now it won't start and it'll just click--sometimes sounding like a machine gun. I was thinking it was a starter problem.
I took the starter out and when I hook it up to a battery with cables, it will turn, though it won't really go hard. So now I"m thinking it's the solenoid. What I'm wondering is if there is some easy way to test whether or not the solenoid is any good, and whether it's an easy replacement if it isn't. Also, I've read in other old posts about cleaning or replacing the brushes and bushings--is this something easy enough for a non-mechanic like myself?
And does it sound like the diagnosis is accurate? Thanks in advance.

Doug

If it spins but does not engage the flywheel, then it is a broken bendix spring. If it engages the flywheel but does not spin it, the bendix gear is worn and needs replacing. Both of these problems are easy to fix and are common starter repairs for your local starter shop.

if it clicks then you have power to the solenoid. if the starter wont turn, then you have a bad solenoid or bad cable connections to the starter and battery. you can check this by shorting across the solenoid terminals with a "BIG" jumper (one jumper cable). make sure the tractor is in neutral. I would guess the battery is poor, old, the cables on the battery or starter are corroded, etc. poor cables are very common on a 40 year old tractor. also make sure the starter case is clean where it bolts to the engine block and has a good "ground", same with the battery cable.
