The old WD45 or WD Serial question

The serial # on my rear left diff. housing is clearly stamped WD160916. My Engine is 45-16779-G
I read somewhere that if i had a WD45 that the 45 would be stamped next to the serial number rather than the WD as in my serial. The engine is a definate WD45. Everything else also appears to be 1954 WD45. By number alone. It would appear to be a 45. Was i missinformed on the wd/45 next to the serial or does that only apply to the engine?

The WD prefix was used on the "tractor" serial numbers on all the WDs & WD-45s from '48 thru '57. When the WD-45 was introduced, they began placing a 45 in front of the "engine" serial numbers instead of the previously used WD prefix. You are the proud owner (I hope you're proud) of a 1954 WD-45.

The last WD no. was 146606. You have a 45, but why it says WD is another question.

The serial numbers of WD 45's all began with WD. The serial number of the last WD was WD146606 and the first WD45 was WD146607. There was no change in the tractor serial numbers...they just kept on going like nothing ever happened. As the other post stated, the engine serial number (found on the engine block near the carburetor) started W-##### on WD engines and 45-###### on WD-45 engines (and fyi it started 17-#### on D-17, 170 and 175 gas engines).
