Spent about an hour exercising the 7040 yesterday. Albeit for being a little rough looking, it appears to be a fairly solid unit with a fairly strong 6300+ hour engine that has a slight oil leak coming from the valve cover gasket. All the gears seem to be there (pwr director tranny) and without and noticeable growl or grumble and the clutch is smooth. It does not grab or snap in. Pwr director worked ok and the clutch always put it into low like it is supposed to when you depress the clutch. Brakes work great. The 3pt hydraulics seem to work and the pto starts and stops ok. Power steering works just fine and for its age and use, the cab is in decent shape. Now for the down side. Other than the engine oil pressure light, the other idiot lights didn't work including the tach. Maybe just bulbs or some wiring repairs needed here. But now the real questions--- 1)Just before I shut it down after driving it around etc., while sitting in the cab (unit not moving) with it at an idle, I heard what I believe to be a noise like a bad throw-out bearing coming from under the cab floor. Depressing the clutch did not supress or eliminate the noise! Tried many gear positions and combinations and still the noise was there. Got out of the cab an listened; it was less noticable but it was still there. It did not seem like it was coming from the engine, but from some place between the rear of the engine and front of the tranny. Does any body have any ideas what this could or might be?? I don't want to buy nor can I afford a tranny rebuild. 2)After the unit was shut down for a while, I pulled out the dipstick under the driver's seat (tranny I think) to check the oil level. What I found was, clean oil, but it was very high above the full mark. Could this be an indication of some sort of a leak from somewhere else or maybe just and overfill by someone? Really like this tractor, but I cannot afford to buy big problems. So if any of the AC mechanics or others out there could give me some insight on these items, I would be very appreciative. Thanks Tom
