Leaking Axle Seal

The outer axle seal on my 1950 A-C Model B started leaking the other day after a lot of hard use. The seals have only recently been replaced, but the axle was scored from a broken bearing. I tried to polish it, but the heavy use must have eaten up the seal.

My questions:

1. I seem to remember from my parts manual (that I have loaned out and not gotten back) that there is supposed to be a type of bushing/spacer between the wheel and the seal. This was not present. Will that cause the seal to leak?

2. If there are supposed to be bushings/spacers, what are they supposed to do?

3. When I pull the wheel the next time, I am going to take the axle stub to a machine shop to have the scoring repaired. Is it preferable to have the axle welded up and turned back down to the correct diameter where the seal rides or is a "Speedi Sleeve" a better option?

I have had very good luck with the speedi-sleeves,go to your local bearing dist. they should be able to fix you up.

i dont remember any spacer between the hub and the seal. if i remember right the seal is about 5/8 inch thick. i used a CR25065 which i believe was about 3/8 inch thick. i had a groove also in the shaft. i put a small spacer behind the seal to move the seal out slightly and "ride" on a diffferent part of the shaft. also like a little RTV on the outside of the seal to the case. seemed to work fine.
