I'm in the market for a tractor of about 80 to 100 HP for loader work and tillage work of about 100 acres. Found a nice Allis-Chalmers 1970 190xt with Allied loader and I think dual PTO for $7,500. A friend of mine said I should look for a John Deere 4020 or something. I don't know much about the Allis tractors. What would be pros and cons of the 190xt? Thank you.
P.S. I have both dealers in the same town close by of which the Allis dealer is actually larger.

Which series 190XT is it? Earlier ones had light rear end parts- like D19, and they often did not stand up. Company had warranty replacement program for early series. Check with the dealer to determine if the rear end is old style or updated. Which fuel are these tractors- gas or diesel? 4020 gas is outrageous on fuel consumption. Also, check if AC pto is independent or do you need the foot clutch to first engage the pto. I believe some had the option, while all 4020s would be independent pto.

It is a Landhandler series and has the PTO lever on the right side console and I'm told it is independent. I'm looking at a diesel. Also looked at a pretty nice 4020 with a GB loader today. The dealer wants $9,800 for it. It is a 1967 with power shift. I like the 190xt better so far because the controls are more convenient and it has tilt steering. Thanks.

We have the same 190XT - great tractor. The pto is not independent like the 4020 - you have to use the power director (high range-low range lever) as a hand clutch to keep it live. That pto lever being on the console tells me you have what I have - a hydraulically-actuated pto, which means you can reportedly shift it in gear without pushing in the clutch. Me, I've always used the clutch - the equipment starts easier with less stress.

Both of them are rated around 90 hp. The 190XT diesel has a turbo, while the 4020 diesel does not. Both are 6 cylinders. Good tractors.

Unless you find a JD 4020 for the same price,which you wont,the AC is a good deal,easier on fuel,parts are cheaper,it has a loader,and it is a dependable machine.My buddy farmed with a 190XT with cab,it was great.
