Started working on my FREE-B yesterday, engines in bad shape bout a gallon of water drained out of the pan before any oil came out, one piston with the center jerked out of it, drove 3 pistons out and liners came with it, anyway no prob. on engine part I can do that but I noticed an external coil mounted under the magneto with a wire run into magneto I'm guessing coil is bad in magneto this was done to make it run, would like to fix magneto but never been into one further than replacing points, is parts still available for this (Fairbanks-Morse) and I would also be interested in a book on magneto rebuilds. Thanks

I just got a new catalog from Lindsay books and there is a book available on how to restore magnetos for $21.95. You ca get a catalog sent to you or order from Lindsaybks.com, I have not ordered this one but have one of their old books on electric motors and there is a lot of information in it .

I just redone a fmx4b3 mag and it wasn`t that hard. But I have heard the fmj mag are a little more difficult but if you get them right it will run for a long time. I have redone 8 tractors, red and green and orange and have noticed that most had timing problems. Just got done with a 37 wc handcrank, didn`t have to do anything to the motor it had a implusecoupler spring broke in the mag and was out of time. starts on the 2nd crank everytime. good luck steve

Just found the magneto book on Ebay under tractor parts section, the bid price on it now is $24.95, this book is by the late Neil Yerigan who was the best on old mags. Hope this helps.

The coils are not that hard to install in the magneto, just be sure that you realign the timing marks on the two small gears that are in there. And yes the parts are avaiable at some of your NAPA stores or you can get in touch with Norm at normstoy.com and he should have them in stock. As far as the book goes go to a Barnes and Knowble book store and they should have one that is called How to Rebuild Tractor Magnetos, very good book. Hope this helps. Buddy
