Hello all. I was wondering, does any one have any ideas on how to get a crank shaft pulley off??? I went to a machine shop and talked with a guy that has an Allis Chalmers and he said that they weren't that hard to get off, he said you could pull on it hard and it should come off and if that didn't work, He said you could take a flat head screw driver and put it down to the crank behind the pulley and hit it with a hammer and that should pop it off but you had to be careful not to hurt the crank shaft. Well I have tried that and it didn't work, I tried heat and that didn't work either. I think I need to get a puller but he said you couldn't use a puller.Any ideas??? I really want to get it running! I dont want to split the tractor to get it out because I dont have the right tools to do it right now. Thanks, TractorMike

I also have a "B" machine, does yours have a mag? Mine does, havn't messed with this summer but in the past it's been quite the problem child as something is slipping. I was able to pull my pulley off with justmy fingers so many years ago when my Father blew the front seal. I will recomend using a 3 jaw puller, with lots and lots and lots of penetrating oil. When and if you have to hit it with something, hit with block of wood as this will give it some spring action and not have a breaking problem. Luck, tell us how well it works out.

Greaseman, My tractor does have the mag. I don't think I can use a 3 jaw puller because someone in the past tried to get the pulley off and now there is a chip missing out of the pulley, But hopefully I will be able to use a 2 jaw puller. When I get it off I will let you all know how it went. TractorMike

When using a puller, snug it up real tight, and before giving it enough to break the pulley- whack the puller bolt with a sledge hammer a couple of times. Hit it square on the end, and often times this helps to loosen the hub on the shaft. If you know you are dealing with a straight, rather than tapered shaft, use a drift pin and hammer on the hub right next to the shaft and drive the hub farther on the shaft. Just enough to see movement, then spray WD40 and pull the hub off. If I use heat, I often rub a candle against the part, and let the wax soak into the joint, sometimes leaving it set for a few hours. Some think that's nuts, but I think it does work. Anyone else heard/tried that?

Most of them come off with out a big problem using a three pronged puller, but I broke a few with one of those. If you have some 1/4" steel the size of the pully and cut a slot the width of the hub and slide it behind the pully and hook your puller over the plate you can put a lot more pressure to the puller and not break the pully.
I have broke several and have replaced several that someone had brold and welded to broken piece back on. The back flange on that cast pully is not real tough.

I'm with Steve on this one. I just finished tearing my C down a couple weeks ago. I ended up using a three fingered puller. After a couple turns of the screw, it popped right off the crank (and went back on fairly easy when I was reassembling the engine).

Just take is slow.

i used a small two jaw puller, about 6 inches long that grabbed the back side of the pulley. screw down the center and pulled it right off. it didnt take much effort, but could not be pulledy by hand.
