Hey all, I have again come to the problem that my starter is not working. The battery is fully charged. It has done this before and after a few days it started again. I believe I will have to replace the whole thing. Now, I have tried to remove it in the past and know it is stubborn. I removed the one and only bolt. I believe it is jammed in pretty good. You guys have any suggestions on getting it out? I don't want to damage anything by trying to force it out. It maybe stuck because of rust/paint. All helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated. It's a 1960 D14 Chris

The easiest way to get this starter out, without breaking the drive housing, is to split the tractor and use a piece of brass or oak wood and drive it out. Another thing to try before you take it out is put a jumper cable from the ground side of the battery to the starter housing and try it. I had one of these same starters on a '59 D-14 do the same thing. It was losing its ground between the housing of the starter and the drive end. It was solid rust where these two pieces came together. My starter would run good when I tested it in a vice, but would not operate in the tractor because of this rust on the housing. If you have any other questions, just email me. I could probably give you a few more tips on this particular starter. Chum

Chris,
It sounds like your problem could possibly be a couple of things. First, all of the rust holding the starter in place has probably insulated the starter from having a good ground. Clean the starter and the hole of rust, then lubricate with oil and reinstall the set screw firmly. (Too tight can break the Starter housing.) The other thing could be worn out brushes not making contact. Duey

I agree with Duey. Check the battery cables, ground cable, starter cable, and make sure the starter frame is clean in the hole. wire brush the screw before clamping the starter down. Clean is very important in starter life.
