WD45 transmission problems

I was having problems with the transmission on my wd45. A co-worker suggested that I take off the shifter/cover and check the gears. I did and the gears look o.k. I guess but do I regret that move. Now I can't get the shifter cover back on and the shifter lever has come out and I can't get it back in. Any suggestions?

You have some worn parts. Look and try and figure out what let the shiftlever come out. there is a smap ring and a couple of washer type peices with a round to fit the ball on the shift lever. And there is a key or two, one on each side I think, that keep the shift lever from turning. Fix all this, line up the forks in neutral, figure out how to put the gears in neutral, including reverse, and put the cover assy. carefully on. Let the clutch out easy for the first time or two in each gear to make sure you aren't in two gears, shift lever or forks not in right place.

There are two square pins on the WD45 tower that align with the shift lever. (only one on the WD transmission) Helps to use grease to hold them in line during reassembly. I usually move the gears into reverse position, as well as the shifter fork into reverse, before slipping the tower assembly into position. Easier to get that reverse fork in the proper position. Otherwise I think there is a collar in the way. I think it's also easier to leave the shift lever out until the tower is bolted into position.

Tim, it has been mentioned on this site that you can use rubber bands to hold the shift forks in a given position when re-installing the tower. They break during use and since they are small and rubber no damage to the gears if they get caught in something. I guess they will drain out with the oil at some point - they certainly don't float ....!

I've since had someone look at the shifter tower assy. One of the major problems encountered was the fact that the shifter rails will not move back and forth. I think that is why the shifter came out (i.e. trying to force the shifter to move) I haven't had the tractor long and it always shifted hard. Dude I bought it from sez "they all shift like that." (?). Original problem was that the transmission made a loud rythmic "click" in all the forward gears. Everytime it "clicked", the shifter twitched real hard. Didn'd do it in reverse though.
