Is there a differance between the steering box on a WD narrow front and wide front?

Earlier WD boxes were different for the different front ends. Later ones and I think all 45 boxes had a flange on the bottom that either a narrow front end, single wheel front end, or linkage for a wide front end, bolted to. If you have a flnage on the bottom you can probably bolt on any front end they made. Look on the front of the steering box and see if there is 3 or 4 holes for a large piece of metal to bolt on that would extend down to support a wide front end. The back of the wide front end piviots on a bracket bolted to the cross member that supports the front of the engine I think. I have a parts book and if you have questions I can look them up for you. e mail me if you want.

WD45 with the narrow front end had the same steering box, with the pedestal, as the WD. I have both now, and grew up with both as well (different tractors). Kraig- does your tractor now have no steering box and you need to purchase one, or are you trying to replace/trade an existing one? I have extra narrow front boxes.

It belongs to a friend of mine, I'm trying to help him find one. Its a wide front. I found a couple of narrow fronts and were told they weight about 250 lbs. This wide front one looks like it weighs about 50 lbs. The part is cheap enough but hat to pay shipping for 250 lbs we can't use.

Boxes were the same inside maybe but the narrow front ends of early ones extended down to the axles in one peice, couldnot be used for a wide front or single wheel front. they had a four bolt cover on top. Later ones had a round "freeze plug" on top and had a flange on the bottom that any type of front end could be bolted to or linkage bolted to.

I don't know anything about this tractor. It belongs to a friend of mine who ask me to help his find a steering box. I think I'm going to have to take a picture of it and post it. I found a couple that were from a narrow front, (this is a wide fron). They weighed about 250 lbs. The box on this one only looks like it should only weight about 50 lbs. Would make a big differance in shipping, especally if it wouldn't work.

Yes- the narrow front end has the pedestal cast into the steering box. The wide front box does not have the pedestal, just an opening at the bottom, where the shaft and steering arm are mounted. I know of one brand of wide front end that would attach to the narrow front tractor, with the pedestal remaining in place, and the steering arms were attached to the original spindles. Mfg. in Belgrade, Mn. by Ray Calundun, its inventor. Out of production many years ago.
