I am restoring a 1942 Allis Chalmers B model. I have recently removed the engine and have begun to disassemble it. Upon removal and examination of the crankshaft and rod bearings I noticed that there all of the bearings were shimmed. I am having the crank turned and with all new bearings. Should I repalce the shims when I reassemble the engine or is this process not needed because of the machine work and new bearings as was in 1942? Thoughts, comments?
Thanks,
Neal

The inserts and caps use four shims on each side on new shaft and new inserts. The bearing inserts should stand out above the block or rod and caps .0055 on each side. This gives .0015 standout with all shims in place and assures a tight fit between the insert and block, rod, and caps. When more than two shims are removed from each side the parting surface of the insert must be filed away .002 for each shim removed. The insert will not crush more than .0015 and you can distort or stretch the cap if you try to make it do so. A pack of 4 .0025 shims on each side on new parts is supposed to give you the correct crush and clearance. This is from a AC manual and the I&T manual.

Neil, like all engines you need .002 or .003 clearance between the crank and bearings for the oil film. As the crank wears a couple thousandths, you take out a shim to get back to proper clearance. Your shim numbers may vary. Check to see if you realy need the crank turned or not. I think 3-4 shims is normal, but that dont mean 2 would not work. Clearance is the name of the game.

You will need to shim the bearings. This was designed into these engines so that shims could be removed rather than replacing the bearings, if done in time.
