I have seen this info posted before, but can't remember what all the differences are between a WD and WD-45. The things I know are:

1) 45 engine does not have side cover plate
2) 45 gear shift lever is curved (I have a 53 WD with curved shifter)
3) 45 tractor serial number identifies it
4) 45 engine has more horsepower
5) seem to remember that the 45 hand clutch has more disks than the WD.
6) what else?

I use my WD to run a 7 foot bush hog and am trying to decide how beneficial it would be to upgrade to a WD-45.

Another difference not usually noted is rear tire size. Standard on WD was 11-28, oversize 12-28. WD45 was 12-28 standard and 13-28 oversize. These are old-size markings, ie 13-28 is now 14.9-28. Seems like most tractors I see are always equipped with the oversize tires for each model. Also, WD originally came with a pin holding the drawbar in front, and WD45 had the Snap-Coupler bell. Many WD's were converted to Snap-Coupler. I don't believe WD45's had radiator shutters, but many WD's did, like some WC tractors.

The only other difference is the stroke of the crank. And thats what gives you the 9 h.p. more than a "wd". But I'm told that you can put a crank from a "wd45" in the "wd".

The WD was set up for a hand crank, but the '45 is "dummied" in that the steering gear box retains the passage for the crank, while the engine pulley is not adapted for hand starting.

My 1955 WD45 with wide front has a complete hand crank setup.
