was using my model c mowing for the first time-ran great for an hour then started light black smoke turning to moderate black smoke and lost lots of power. let it rest for 30 minutes ran ok for a few minutes and then the same thing. Was looking around and noticed that the air filter is not connected to the carb. missing a hose or clamp. I'm not extremely mechanical but was thinking that if the carb is choked full of grass clippings it would cut off air, engine doesn't burn fuel entirely causing black smoke and loss of power. I wanted someones opinion before I try to do anything. if this is the problem, is cleaning it out pretty straight foreward or are there any tricks I need to know.

with black smoke you are getting a too fuel rich mixture. Could be excessive fuel (Carb settings or stuck float etc) or lack of enough air (stuck choke, dirty air intake etc.) None of these are hard to troubleshoot, I would start with the air intake first and make sure it is not plugged then go to the fuel. Advice about ignition is good too.

Brian,
Could be a condensor or the coil going bad (starts to break down and short out when hot). Poor spark can result in unburned fuel (black smoke and loss of power). Duey
