transmission clutch malfunction. the shifter collar was broken into 5 peices and the trans case was dry, this is a wet type clutch and i have little knowledge on this type of clutch, my brother n law owns it and he used it for mowing , when i looked at it to diagnose the problem i noticed the hydrolic system was dry,he said he ran it that way because when he filled the hydrolic fluid it would leak onto the clutch and the tractor would stop pulling like the clutch was slipping, i am stumped ! can anyone help ?

From the way you said it, it sounds like the transmisson clutch is slipping. You will have to remove the battery and the box to get to the cover. You will remove the cover and then you will see the clutch. You will then have to remove the needed shims from the three adjusting points. You are looking to get .030 clearence when the clutch is disengaged. If you can't get the proper clearence, you will then have to replace the clutch. When you get the tractor back together, the cluch will snap hard but this is normal and this should solve your slipping problems. Make sure you keep the required amount of oil in the transmisson, differential and the hydralic pump so you don't lock the transmisson up!

It sounds like you need a manual.

King's Books PO Box 86
Radnor, Ohio, 43066-0086

A quality reprint of the AC WD-45 manual is $5.95 with $2.00 shipping. It is #, AC-17.They have other manuals and books too. I have several and they are good. Good luck with your problem. Post problems here if you need more help as the project goes along.

I would guess that the hydraulic oil leaked forward into the engine clutch compartment(dry clutch) and that made the engine clutch slip. The rear clutch runs in oil (the wet clutch) so hydraulic oil would not affect its operation. Check for leaking seals that allow oil to go forward into the dry clutch compartment. If the shifter collar that was broken was in the wet clutch asssembly, and it was dry, then you would have more leaky seals to replace. Anything can happen, maybe all that oil is going forward through bad seals. Seal replacement could involve anything from pulling the engine and dry clutch to splitting the tractor, depending if the oil is going forward, rearward, or both.
