My 1961 D17 power steering provides very little muscle when the tractor is at idle. If I accelerate a few RPM'S I find some relief. Is this normal? Also at the higher RPM's there is some intermittant relief but it is a little jerky and not smooth thru the entire turning process from stop to stop. I recently added DextronIII to replace what was lost when I pulled the WFE to replace a leaking rear seal. Again, I appreciate your responses to my question! Thanks much!!

Get rid of the Dextron III. It DOES NOT have the lubracating properties that the previous Dextrons had. The formula was changed, for the auto industry, and is now "less slick". In the oil patch, we used Dextron for a lube in high speed gear boxes. When Dextron III came out, these manufactures stated that if Dextron III was used, warrentee was GONE. We went to a 10 wt, R&O, ISO VG-150 lube as a replacement. ( R&O = Rust and oxidation inhibitors ). You have good suggestions here on this net for what to use. Hope this helps.

thie is from my operating instructions manual. POWER STEERING----front support is oil sump-capacity 5 quarts.keep filled to 5/8" above segment gear. for temp. above zero use s.a.e.10-w-30. for temp. below sero use s.a.e. 5w-20. THIS IS FOR A D17 SERIES 2

A worn pump can also cause weak steering at low RPM. Sometimes a slightly heavier oil will solve most of the problem.

I have had a similar problem on my '58. Usually the culprit is low fluid. Fluid level is to be just above the gear that you can see inside the resv. Would be worth checking it.

Thanks Ryan! I have noticed some frothing and there has been a considerable amount of belching out of the breather/fill tube since the repair. I am not sure about covering the gear, I have not seen it, about how far down is it from the top of the fill/breather opening? Sorry about the double post it was an accident.
