not long painted the Allis B (about a month or so)using a brand of paint called Ameron that I got from our Allis parts dealer and have a fuel leak around the glass bowl (gasket I think) which is literally disolving the paint like stripper...what can I do is there a way of fuel proofing the paint finish...also we had to take the engine apart after painting and noticed that wherever grease has been surface finish is now dull..rocker cover, block etc ...and sump cover bolts paint peeled when washed in petrol...I dont think I am alone and wonder what can be done
regards
frustrated tractor restorer...

you cant use the house and porch paint, spend the big money and buy the ppg paint. you will never regret it. the same thing happened to me.once you do , youll never buy the cheap paint again.

Pete,
Steve is right on the money. Basically you get what you pay for especially when it comes to paint. I used paint made by Dupont called "Dulux" Allis Chalmers Persian Orange. I paid around $125. gallon. Has a nice shine, and man is it tough! As I reassemble my Model B, it's tough to keep from hitting things when your putting things together, but this Dupont paint that I used hasn't chipped or peeled yet as I assemble. I'm really pleased with it. If you want some info on it, I'll get it off the can.....

I should mention i use Delstar (DAR) made by PPG- also cost about $125 gallon. With thinner and hardener you can say $200.

Pete, you can get better response on the Painting Discussion board, but i can give you the short story. There are two basic types of paint. No 1 cost $25.00 a gallon. You buy it at farm store, wal mart, ace hardware, etc. This is a universal paint to cover implements, swing sets, outside equipment to keep it from rusting. It does not stay "shinny" and it does not resist gasoline. The other paint is "automotive grade" which is used on your truck or car. This paint can cost $100-$200. per gallon dependnig on if it is acrylic enamel, emroy, epoxy, etc. All of these normally have a hardener and will setup hard in a few hours. They resist ultraviolet light, stay shiny and if you spill gas on it, no problem. Ever dribble gas on the car fender while filling it? The standard enamel you buy at the hardware store takes 30 days to evaporate all the solvents out and it is then "kind of hard". You will notice after you paint with this stuff, you can gouge it with your finger nail a week after it has been painted. Its o.k. to use on a work tractor, buy you end up wiht what you describe. Gets dull in the sun, and you got to watch the gas spills.
