My C's steering gearbox needs some work but I'm scratching my head on 1) How the steering wheel shaft is removed from the gearbox. I've removed the 4 bolts at the base of the shaft and I've removed access plate on the side and removed the horizontal shaft. I still can't get the steering shaft to come out. What am I doing wrong?

2) How does a guy get the inner and outter bearings (actually more like sleeves) for the horizontal shaft out? Do I need to use a hydraulic press? Can a bearing speciality shop do this for me?

Put a pair of vice grips on the stearing shaft a foot or so up from the stearing box and tap on the vice grips and it will come out. Shouldn't take much. You have years of crud holding the bottom bearing in, probably some rust as well. Make sure the the shaft is not cocked sideways when the bottom bearing is coming out through where the top bearing seats.

Thanks Dick! That worked like a charm (I thought about doing this before you told me but I was hesitant that maybe I was missing something that was holding that shaft in place - I didn't want to damage it!)

I still need to get new bushings and figure out how to fix the worn "pin" on the cross shaft. Any ideas on the pin? I think you posted a message (that is now in the archive) that has the name of a guy that has replacement pins but the post didn't have his phone number...

Roger VanCamp 219-747-3455 sells the new paw, post, er what ever ya want ta call it. You drill out the old one and press in the new one.

OK, I've checked with all the major bearing distributers in Des Moines and none of them has anything even close to the ball bearing cups in this gearbox? The top cup is completely shot (it doesn't look like it has seen any grease for at least 40 years and is beyond being saved). Any ideas on where to get a new or used bearing cup?

Check with Dan at Quad 4 X 4 (406-446-2427) ([email protected]) for the bearings. I believe that the bearings were also used in the earlier Jeep CJ Ross steering boxes, and he deals in aftermarket Jeep parts.

My local Agco dealer gave me a surprise phone call on Friday. He managed to locate a new set at an Agco dealership in Canada.
