Earlier, I asked what was the first tractor you operated. What was the first tractor you've owned? This was on the Farmall forum. I got a great response. I am asking the same question here. This is to reward everyone with good thoughts. Robert Calhoun.

My first tractor I operated was a farmall Super C that is still owned by my father, I have since purchased: Allis Chalmer's "B", Allis Chalmer's "B125", Ferguson TO-30,Centaur KV-30(?), and a Farmall "Super C".

I used to get to ride on my grandfather's WD Allis Chalmers and 180 when I was very young. The first tractor I drove by myself was a Ford 9N. I didn't like it because it was very difficult to steer. Then My dad bought an IH 240 utility with power steering and a loader and it was a little easier to drive. The next tractor he bought was a JD500 Loader Backhoe. What a great machine that was! I loved to operate it, it had so much power, and was very agile. The first tractor that I bought was a Farmall Cub. It was cute but grossly under powered. My next tractor was an Allis D14. It is my favorite and an all around great tractor.

First tractor I drove was a WC Allis(not sure what year)dad extended the clutch pedel back and over using a piece of rebar so I could reach the pedel, then I drove a 60 JD. These were the first of over a hundred tractors. I remember hauling in tobacco with these to old tractors at the age of five. Twenty years later and I use the 60 to cultivate with. Dad sold the old allis shortly after, he's still kicking himself for that one.

First tractor I remember driving was a 1948 WD, just brought home from the dealer. I was 15 at the time and had just gotten a job as a hired man for a small dairy farmer near home. He put me to work on that tractor after school, weekends and 6 days a week in summer. Worked for him for 10 years. Did all the plowing, tilling, planting cultivating, mowing, raking. (after he patiently taught me how). I can still hear that engine working today as I remember it. Best sound I ever heard over many hours of time. We also used the WD on a rotobaler for some years. A little after I started working for him he bought a used John Deere H as a utility tractor. That was a decent tractor also and I loved the sound of the 2-popper when loaded down! I always remembered those tractors and the houts I spent with them and other's over ten years or so.
My fantisy dream was to someday own a WD and a JD 2-cyl. About 5 years ago I had the opportunity to buy a 1948 JD model A in decent condition for a very decent price. I did so and my son and I spent the summer restoring it. Love that sound! Two years ago I ran accross a 1948 WD, just like the first tractor I ever operated. It was a dream come true for me. Decent condition, decent price, and the chance to hear that engine working hard again!. I now live where I have some land which is tillable and some space to work on the equipment. We restored the WD like new and I bought a 3/14 snap coupler plow. My son and I enjoy using these two tractors plowing and working ground and hauling logs for firewood. My next wish is a decent WD-45 which is a tractor we had in later years, plus some more snap coupler implements.

Dave

Robert, The first tractor I kinda operated but drove was our neighbors big four wheel drive John Deere. Course he was in there with me, but he let me drive it around the field once pulling a disk. Then I got my AC B a couple of weeks ago, and that's the first tractor I ever owned. TractorMike

The first tractor that I operated was a new 1947 Oliver 60, I was so little that I had to pull up on the steering wheel to apply enough foot pressure to the clutch. Moved up to a WD Allis in the mid fifties, currently own a D-12 Allis and a Ford 9N, mostly retired.

Bob,
First tractor I owned is the one I just bought a little over a year ago, 48' Allis "B". Having a lot of fun restoring it, and learned a lot in the past couple years just reading the wealth of info on this site. Always loved antique tractors. Had a chance to buy a 1930 Fordson on steel about 12 years ago, but didn't have the place to keep it. Had to pass that one up....Have a place now, and a great little tractor too!

The first Tractor I drove was my dads Allis C which I now own, the first one I owned was a Case industrial S with a hough loader on it, the second one was my 52 Farmall Cub, the third was my C which I am now restoring to put back to work. I am looking right now at an old Allis WD and a Case Va I am leaning towards the Allis because of the live pto and more power but the Va is in much better shape. You should do a survey of what is your favorite implement to use, I think it would be my David Bradley rake. THE FIRST TRACTOR I EVER DROVE WAS A WD-45 AC, BUT THE FIRST TRACTOR I PERSONALLY OWNED WAS A 350 HP WOODS-COPELAND FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WITH A 903 CUMMINS ENGINE, ALLISON SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC WITH DROP BOX, DUELLED WITH 30.5 32'S. THE ENGINE WAS TURBO'D OF COURSE WHICH MEANS IT HAD A STRAIT PIPE DIRECTLY OFF OF THE TURBO CURVING UP THEN OUT. YOU COULD HEAR IT TALK TWO MILES AWAY. THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD COME CLOSE TO PULLING LIKE IT WAS ANOTHER WOODS-COPELAND, BUT NOTHING (NOT EVEN A DETROIT) SOUNDED AS GOOD AS THAT TRACTOR. MAYBE I'LL GET AROUND TO POSTING SOME PICTURES SOME DAY. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

The first tractor I ever owned was a 1950 A-C Model B, and I still have it. It came equipped with a Monroe seat instead of the bench seat. Guess this was a dealer installed option. It now has a 3-point conversion that was put on years ago. I use the tractor regularly on my little farm, and it still works as hard as ever.

I have a Kubota that is my daily " using" tractor, and it is a superb piece of engineering with its hydrostatic transmission, etc. But when I just want to enjoy the pleasures of being on a tractor where I can hear no phones and see no people, I always crank up "Alice."

My wife has a 1950 Farmall Cub that she uses a lot in addition to the Kubota, but she has forbidden my touching it except to pull maintenance.

the first tractor i drove was an old grey ford ferguson that my father owned and used to do odd jobs around the neighborhood it had a plow, disk, scoop all three point. i had watched him crank it several times and one sunday while i was home alone, i went out back to see if i could get it started. i did, and after a few mins. i put it in gear and rolled it forward then back to the place it had been parked. i was shaking like a leaf, i didn't want my father to know i'd messed with his tractor, i was 12. years later i would do the same thing to a bulldozer parked on a antenna pad in cam rahn bay viet nam. the end of the pad was a sharp drop down about 30 ft. i got it stopped but could not figure out how to back it up. the first tractor i owned, was a 1946 long hood a jd. i bought it in 70 after i got out of the navy but could not get it running good because nobody collected old tractors in n. cent. mo. at that time. i spent the most time on a 1951 allis w.d. pulling a 2-16 bottom plow thru gumbo clay from sun up to sun set in 1962. i went to bed at nite. broke back, and deaf, wind burned and numb. i could hear that engine in my sleep. i never did learn how to use the roto baler tho but did a lot of bush hogging with a a.c. 6 ft. mower that thing was the heaviest built one i ever saw. i tore the p.t.o. gear box out of the trans. case when i didn't grease and free the slip clutch on that mower like my father told me. he didn't get really mad till he found out how much a used case was. even empty back then it was something like 350.00....
