I have a 1957 D-14 with a single line hydraulic system. My shop manual for the D-14 shows a 2-line system, with pressure and return lines. Does anyone know if I could change over to the 2-line system? My intent is to install a 2 or 3 spool remote valve to simultaneously operate my loader and the snap coupler lift arms. I would have to put the dash lever in the "lift" position and leave it there during the entire operation. Will the factory pump tolerate this type of use, or is my idea a bad one? Any helpful hints would be appreciated, as I have a hard time justifying the cost of a full front-mounted live pump system. Thanks.

If you leave the hydraulic lever up only while using the loader you shouldn't have a problem. We have a post driver on our D15 series II and leave the lever up while driving in a post. When I move from one post to the next I lower the lever. Figure 40 seconds up and 20 seconds down per post - we drive anywhere from 45 to 60 posts an hour and will do this for 2 to 3 hours at once, so that will give you some idea of use time.

YT has a two way valve for a D series for sale on the website for about $200. It reportedly includes a pressure regulator to drop the 3500 psi (or whatever a D series is) down to the 2000 to 2200 psi range used today. Probably a good place for you to start your system with.

I have the same D-14 you have. A dual action system like you describe was probably an option.
Remember a D-14 replaced a CA in a era when hydraulics were just coming into their own in ag. I haven't done it yet, but for eight years I have intended to mount a pump on the belt pulley. The room is there. The pump will be just as "live" as the belly pump is now. The rear lift will be independant of the rest of the hydraulic systems. A pump and hoses will not be in harms way in the front. The pump and hoses should be protected to a point by the loader frame and front axle. you can put your reservoir tank under the oil pan and clutch housing. Plumbing into the torque tube or hydraulic resevoirs through the side plate are options too. Power steering would become an option worth considering. If the pump would handle the constant pumping I am honestly not sure. Certainly the oil will get hotter sooner. Plumbing in an oilcooler off an old car is not hard to do. Hydraulic pumps are not cheap but for about three hundred bucks a new gear or vane pump of about 10gpm can be bought. Which is what your 3spool control and hoses will set you back. Add this to the pump costs plumbing, connecting to the belt pulley(take the pulley off and just use the pulley base), hoses and a good day or two of constuction spending a thousand is not out of the question. But you will have a basically modern tractor that is more user friendly.

Thanks for the info. I too have thought of a belt driven pump. I wonder if the side thrust would take out the front seal or bearing on the crank? Also, it seems that it might take a double belt to handle the load, and I think I only have pulley space for one belt in addition to the one for my (retrofitted) 12 volt alternator. One downfall of a new pump would be lower operating pressure than the old Allis system. I might have to replace the lift cylinders for my loader to get the same lifting capacity I have now.
