Whats all the bad scoop to know about a 1958 D-17 gas Whats all the good dirt about a D-17 never owned one this could be my 1/st It runs good the old farmer has owned since new and it has set out almost every night some rust faded paint tires weathered come with 3 bottom plow $1000.00 Every body arounf here is IH or John Deere they all said I should have bought a real tractor. Did I do ok or not also its a wide front How hard on gas? Thanks for all info and have a good week

The D-17 diesels have a finicky need to cool down after a day's work. They're kept happy by letting them idle a bit before shutdown. Failure to do so has been known to result in cracked heads.

Dan, I have an 58 D-17 at one time was the work horse on a farm done all the plowing, disc work, planting had an old loader, and snow plowing then it set for about 8 years because it needed rebuilt, I rebuilt and repainted and all this does any more is plow a little snow and rake a little hay. You have yourself a very good dependable tractor, as far as the brakes I put new
shoes on mine after replaceing the the seals and they work great, the only problem is it will jump out of 3rd gear when going down a grade and I was told they are known for that,

17s are good tractors. It didn't feed the old guys family by being a piece of junk. D-17s are approximatly the same hp (gas)as 400 farmalls or 720 deeres. They pull more because they are heavier, but five gallons of gas in them won't last near as long as the steal you now own.

Dann, I don't know what part of the country your from, but around here you would be arrested because you got a steal. That's cheap ! Those early D17 's were kind of poor on brakes but other than that the D17 was quite a workhorse.There's a reason why they made the D17 for a whole decade.There's a series IV here on the farm that always starts and has awsome hydraulics. Trust me , you did OK. Scott
