What is the difference between 1 through 4 series of the D17. Butch

Series three also had the disc brakes, Series four had independent hydraulic pump mounted on the right side, where others had pulley option. More hydraulic capacity, plus it was independent. Many series four had three-point, instead of Snap-Coupler hitch. Some series one had only manual steering. Later ones had alternator and 12 volt systems, I believe negative, instead of positive ground like on series 1-3. Early diesels were not dependable engines. Hard on heads. Like many other tractors, subsequent series brought improvements in features.

There are quite a few differences but I'll give just a few. The series IV had band/disc type brakes which were far better than the older brake drum/shoe type although they are harder to change. The hydraulic controls on the IV is on your right side next to your seat as compared to the older styles that had the hydraulic control on the steering column. Also the IV had 2 hydraulic cylinders that were mounted on the outside of the tractor to operate the hitch arms as compared to the older style that had the single cylinder internally in the rockshaft housing. The D17 was/is a fine workhorse.

Butch, The series I & II tractors had negligible mechanically differences. The orange paint changed, different colors on the grill, wheels and different Allis-Chalmers name badges. The series III had some styling changes with the lights relocated to the fenders, oval muffler, and the name badge had the series III on it with a cream back ground. Once again, mechanically the same basic tractor as the I & II. The series IV tractor was significantly different because of the live hydraulics and 3-point hitch. Norm Swinford's book: Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985, is fairly comprehensive and provides much detail on the D-17. Tom
