B Connecting Rod Bolt

Getting ready to put together the engine for my 48 B. I read in the I&T book on torque specs for the connecting rod bolts, but does that torque spec include the bolt which locks the rod to the piston pin? Didn't see anything mentioned on that unless I missed it somewhere. I'm installing new liners and piston kits. Can anybody shed some light? How bout' Dick L. the engine "wizard"? From what I've been reading & seeing here at this site, Dick, "you da man" with the engine pix!

I never use a torque wrinch to tighten the rod on the wrist pin. I clamp the rod in a vice and use a 1/2 rachet and pull them real snug. I would guess if checked they would be about 30 ft lb's or so. I will post a torque chart that makes a good guide. The bolt used for the wrist pins is a grade eight fine thread. In this application it is not necessary to torque to the max.

I'm not trying to criticize your advice, but when I started working for an A-C dealer in 1976 I was told to never clamp a connecting rod in a vice when tightening the wrist pin clamp bolt. They told me to clamp a large tapered punch in the vice and then slide the wrist pin, piston and rod assembly onto the punch and then tighten the clamp bolt after the rod is properly positioned on the pin. The problem with clamping the rod in the vice is if you get too heavyhanded in tightening the bolt you run the risk of twisting the rod. With your experience , you probably haven't had this happen to you but the same can't be said for others with less experience. Just a lesson I learned many years ago.

Gordon,
Thanks for the advice! There's not much to those rods, and when I snugged them up I felt the twisting or "loading" that I was putting on the rod the way I had it chucked in the vise. I'm not a big guy, so I doubt I did any damage. Good advise though!
