Some time back I found an article on converting 6V systems to 12V. The article discussed using a one wire alternator and putting a 50 amp diode in the charging line to eliminate possible backfeed when the tractor was shut off. Does someone have a part number (Radio Shack I think) for that diode? Thanks.

We build original type wiring harnesses for farm tractors, including alternator conversions. We use an oil pressure switch to energize the automotive alternators, so there is no need to make any connection to the ignition circuit. A word of caution about alternators: it is best to use one of lower amperage (42 amps), so that the original size wiring and ammeter are not overloaded. If you use an alternator of greater output, we recommend that the new wiring and ammeter be sized to match the greater output. Contact us for nore detailed information: www.wiringharnesses.com

Jim, the single wire unit just has one big wire, about 10 gauge that goes to the battery to charge it. The voltage regulator signal wire and diode are inside the alternator. If you have a standard Delco alternator (with internal regulator, external signal wire) off a car or truck, you need to have one of the small wires (2) switched off by the key, or a diode so power does not feed backward thru the alternator to ground when the motor is off. The standard alternator is available at Auto Zone for $35. if you need help wiring, post again. The single wire alternator is about $80-$90.

Check Archives for 'D17 Generator Conversion'. There is info there regarding your question. Good luck!
