Magneto ignition system. It's cold here in MN and the tractor is in an unheated garage but I've got a new battery and pretty new cables and new starter switch. Also I had the battery warm before I started. It cranks over fast enough. What happens is that when I start cranking it with the choke on it will stop turning (and actually go backward slightly - I was watching the fan) then crank some more and stop again. If I keep cranking, it keeps doing this. I noticed that sometimes if I have the choke off it will keep cranking non-stop. I got the tractor started a few days back and seemed to run fine even with this starting problem. Today I could not get it to start. The tractor started fine earlier this winter. Any ideas?

I'm assuming you're sure the mag is on the tractor and timed correctly. If so and it does as you say, are you by chance cranking the tractor with a 12 volt battery? If so, that alone might be causing part of the problem. Some 6 volt tractors will crank so fast with a 12 volt battery that the impulse coupling will not stay in the zero advance mode properly. Centrifugal force draws the dogs of the impulse coupling in and allows the mag to go to the advanced spark or running engine mode. If it cranks fast enough, the dogs will withdraw, the spark will arrive way before TDC and the engine will fight the starter because it tries to fire backwards. Gravity is all that allows the dog to stick out at crank speed making the mag spark at TDC. Some late mags used small springs inside the impulse couplings to make the mag stay in the retard mode until a higher RPM was reached.

I was using a 6 volt battery. Duey's message got me thinking. I tried cranking the tractor today and the impulse coupling was not clicking. I'd forgotten about that. So I tapped near the magneto(where the firing order is written) with a rubber mallet. I cranked the tractor again(clicking was back) and it started in about 3 seconds. So what would cause the impulse coupling weights to stick? Any way to tell which would have springs and which doesn't?

If the engine is trying to turn backward, the timing is off and it is firing before it reaches TDC. If the engine timing setting has not been changed, the mag sounds like the culprit. My $0.02

I agree with Duey. Last Saturday I started my WD...and it was very difficult. It's the magneto. Now you know why everyone went to coil ignition.

John, Sounds to me like the magneto impulse is not working. This is what causes the clicking at cranking speed. If the weight springs are broken, the weights will not swing out and catch on the pin to retard the spark. This delay in spark allows cranking by hand without kicking back. It sounds like your mag is kicking back against the starter. Time to get the impulse rebuilt ! Duey

John, Check the amount of spark that the magneto is producing. Also, check fundemental items like the points, moisture in the cap, etc. Verify that the timing is correct; if it is advanced, the kick-back you described could be a result of this condition.
