My 48B has the head off cus it seized during restoration. it is now unstuck but we took the head off just in case...any way the sleeve closest to the steering wheel is loose...and when you crank the tractor over the piston sits to the back of the sleeve (off centre) and the sleeve lifts up and down at the bottom of the stroke in that bore. there are many theories as to what is wrong - bent conrod, something wrong with the gudgeon, o rings stuffed...I wanna know what to do...any ideas guys

For what ever reason the rings have gripped fast to the sleeve and turning the crank with the head off has acted as a sleeve puller or pusher. The least you will need, is to install new O rings on that sleeve. Not a good idea to take the head off and turn the crank on a stuck engine without putting a 7/16 short bolt with a flat washer in a head bolt holes next to the sleeves to clamp the sleeve down. That is unless your going to take the sleeves out any way.
This is a lesson in the school of hard knocks. Now ya know.

the problem was there before the head came off...when you turned her over slowly before she siezed...there was the same sorta noise...we didnt turn her over first while stuck with the head off we tap tap tapped on the pistons with a block a wood and left diesel soaking in the pots for a while...I have the head off and rather than face a possible major drama later,,,thought you guys with that wealth of knowledge may be able to help

You need to remove the oil pan, pull the two nuts off the connecting rod and lift the liner, piston and rod out the top. Disassemble the piston- liner on the work bench. See if the rings are broke or stuck. Hone cylinder, clean piston, maybe need new rings, need 2 o-rings for sure on the bottom of the liner. If the rod is straight and bearings look good, you are ready to reassmeble. Make sure the piston pin is free in the piston, the rod will be clamped tight to the pin.
