I posted this on the unofficial Allis page and will post here too to get more opinions. I bought a 1949 C a few weeks back. After letting it run about 10 minutes and driving a couple of loops around the yard, it spews water out the overflow hole on the radiator with pretty good force. It was around 65 degrees outside. I'm guessing maybe thermostat? I can't see any signs of leaking at the head gasket and the motor otherwise runs fine, no smokes, misses or knocks and starts real easy. After this the block felt cool and when I checked the oil, the oil was barely warm. The radiator has one leak, but it smells real bad on the inside like its rotten. Could this be caused by just a rotten radiator? Thanks for any opinions.

Jc,
My guess as to the radiator problem would be a mouse nest and some decaying little bodies. That would account for the smell and possible plugged core. Also the coolant level should be an inch or so below the top or the coolant will overflow as it heats up and expands. Duey

leave the radiator cap off and start the motor. let it set and run at half throttle for several minutes. watch in the radiator and see if the water is moving. feel the top hose to see if it is warm. If water expands slowly and you get a little out the top, no problem. like Duey said, maybe it just needs drained and flushed. If you see no flow, the thermostat may be stuck, but this is not normal. usually it will break and fail open. If you get a constnt pressure and flow of water out the radiator cap, starting when cold, before it warms up, you may have a head gasket leak (or cracked head) and be pushing exhaust gas into the water jacket. Might take out the spark plugs and look at them. If one is really really clean, it is burning water.

First, it shot one good stream out the overflow hole, while I was driving it in second gear (just once)then it quit and the radiator just went to steaming. Then next day, I started it up and let it idol with the cap off and I didn't notice any flow in the radiator. After I shut it off, the radiator just went to steaming for about 15 minutes. Concerned that I got it too hot I checked the oil and it was barely warm and the block wasn't even hot to the touch. I then checked the plugs and they seemed to have the normal amount of carbon.

I would drain and flush the radiator. MIght be good the take off the thermostat housing while it is drained. dont be suprised if the thermostat is gone or broke. When i removed mine, both bolts twisted off and i had to remove with vice grips. The bolts go into the water jacket and will rust out. Do yo feel water in the hoses when running? I would think you could see some movement in the radiator with it running, even if thermostat is good or bad.

I don't think my problem is as serious as I first thought it could be. Went home last night took off the radiator cap and filled it full(to make up for what I lost) First I checked the oil and no antifreeze was in it. Then I let it run and at first I was worried because it was steadily pushing some fluid out the top, but no bubbles. THen the thermostat did open up and the antifreeze went back down. Put the cap on and drove it 4 laps around the yard and over all, I had it running for about 25 minutes. The motor didn't get hot, but after I shut it off, the radiator does steam, but I now believe the steaming is coming from the small leak in the top of the radiator and the antifreeze is running down the radiator. I'm just not noticing it steaming while its running because the fan is dispersing it because I started it back up and it quit steaming. Thanks for all the help.
