Looking at CA to buy. Value and other questions

I'm going to be looking at a late 52 CA that's for sale with a wide front, loader and chains. Owner says it's in great shape except the bucket is junk. Tires are good, runs great and strong hydraulics. Price is in the upper $2000's, negotiable. Is that a fair price?

I also have a chance to buy a Ford 8n in similar shape with a loader and back blade, wheel weights, no chains. The Ford loader has a separate front pump. Which is the better buy? OK, I know this is the wrong board to ask THAT question but I'm looking for the pros and cons of both so give me your opinions. I'd be using it for snow removal, driveway maintenance, yard landscaping, and hauling firewood out of the woods.

Also a couple questions on the CA... Is it possible to convert the trip bucket over to hydraulic? Can a 3-point hitch be added and at what cost? And if so, can the 3-point and the loader be used at the same time?

Thanks for everybody's input, I'll be looking at it tomorrow afternoon. I'm also looking at a IH B-275 in the morning so if anybody has any thoughts on that tractor I'd like to hear them.

if its much over $2000. it should have tires and paint about new. Agree, the CA is one nice tractor with a wide front. Single hydraulics with dump bucket is a pain, but depends on now much you are using it. Front mounted pump or PTO pump is a possibility.

I grew up driving CA's, but have owned both Fords and a D-12 (similar to CA) with loaders in recent years. The hydraulics questions depend on how the machine is rigged, but unless there is a added-on separate pump for the loader, you can't work a loader and the hitch at the same time on most any of the older tractors. The CA will have much better rear wheel traction than a Ford, especially with a loader. Too much of the Ford's weight is on the front. My D-12 with only 300 lbs of wheel weights and no fluid in the tires has better traction than a Ford I used to have with loaded tires and 1100 lbs of wheel weights. The Ford couldn't get itself up a hill in the snow, whereas the D-12 will push snow going up the same hill. Both need additional counter weight on the hitch to handle a full bucket of crushed stone. The weight of a loader is tough on the front ends of either tractor.

3 point hitch conversions are available for the CA. Depending on the type and who's selling them they sell for $350 to $500. Unless you find one in a salvage yard that fits or you can do heavy welding yourself, fixing the bucket won't be cheap either (another $500 or so to fix or buy universal replacement bucket).

I've worked both 9N's and CA's. The CA is a superior tractor overall.
