Hi Guys! Getting ready to rebuild the engine of my 48 B. Are the shims for the rods still readily available yet? Who can I give a call too? Also, is solid core spark plug wire (Packard 440) okay to use? She's equipped w/a F/M mag. From what I'm told, you shouldn't use resistor plugs or resistor wire. Is this true? Always loved old tractors, and finally got the opportunity to purchase some "orange". Thanks for the help!

Never had a problem using resistor plugs on an antique AC, magneto or not. Always had quality and longevity trouble with Champion plugs. Best service from AC plugs R45S; we use them on all the old Allis around here with fine results.

Thanks guys for your feedback! I never was a champion spark plug fan anyway. I never had any good luck them either! I have a set of AC 45's and also a set of NGK's to try.

I've had similar problems with Champions. Lately the AC R45 seems to be not lasting as long either. Several folks stand by an Autolite 303 for these tractors. My local auto parts guy says they are made better than a Champion or AC, but that may or may not be "research-based." The tractors I have with the 303 really run well, though.

You can get the shim kits from Agco, they are a bit pricey. If I remember about $8 per rod. You should use non-resistor solid core wires and non-resistor plugs so the magneto doesn't have to work as hard to fire the plugs. The discount automotive stores sell a Champion plug that replaces the old J-8 (can't remember the dang number) for $1.50. They are pakaged as lawnmower plugs and they work OK in my A-Cs.
